Huon Aquaculture Hatchery Tour

On Wednesday 29th June 2022 CMS arranged with Huon Aquaculture to have a tour of their salmon hatchery facility at Forest Home in the Huon valley.

17 shed members replied to the invitation for the tour with a light lunch taken at “Willie Smiths” restaurant/café after the tour and prior to our return to Margate.

The tour for was full of information on the breeding habits of salmon along with the storing facilities from eggs through to the releasing stock size in vast storing tanks holding 100,000’s of young 80 gram fingerings.

For biosecurity reasons footwear in the form of rubber boots were supplied with a foot bath at the entrance of each room.

All questions were answered by the tour guide which made the tour very enjoyable and informative. From this facility the salmon are taken by road to Whale Point to be released into the pens in the open sea.

We have been offered a tour of the Whale Point facility if we would like to see the releasing of the hatchery stock. I believe would also be an interesting outing. Hopefully in a few months as the weather should be warmer, we will ask you all once again in the usual manner if you would like to do this trip.

The light lunch at “Willie Smiths” was enjoyed by all as the restaurant/café was very well organised for larger groups.

We would like to take this opportunity in thanking the Members who supplied the transport for the tour. Doing this carpooling makes organising our day out so much easier getting to and fro.

Ken, Social coordinator.
